Ascorbic Acid -L (ultra fine powder)
The most common form of topical vitamin c is L-Ascorbic acid. Our L-Ascorbic acid comes as a fine powder. It is used as an antioxidant, for collagen production, in lightening & brightening formulations, to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and to repair and protect against sun damage.
About L Ascorbic Acid / Vitamin C in DIY Skin Care
L Ascorbic Acid / Vitamin C (ultra fine powder) is a water soluble (up to 25%) antioxidant that gives all the benefits of Vitamin C which include the ability to promote collagen synthesis, resulting in skin that is firmer, stronger and suppler. Ascorbic Acid is a very powerful antioxidant that not only combats the effects of aging on the skin but also reverses them, and ensures the return of a youthful, firm and supple skin that has a more even tone. Ascorbic Acid -L (ultra fine powder) can also be used in a silicone base which is a bit more stable than the aqueous formulation.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) has been applied on the skin for rejuvenation for many many years since it anti-aging and its ability to reverse the effects of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and rough texture were discovered.
Although the body gets its Vitamin C from the foods that we ingest, and fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, papaya and guava are rich sources of Vitamin C, it doesn’t transport very well to places like the skin because it is water soluble and thus gets excreted very quickly. Vitamin C is also a very unstable antioxidant that changes and loses potency quite quickly when in the presence of heat, light and oxygen. Thus topical applications that can be applied directly to the pot of the skin that needs the Vitamin C is the most efficient way of getting this valuable product into the skin.
Once it gets under the skin Vitamin C is good at rebuilding collagen which the fiber that forms skin and whose loss, as we age and as a result of photodamage, results in skin that is sagging, wrinkled and rough-textured. Synthesis of collagen revitalizes the skin, bringing back not just its structure and firmness but also the even tone and smoothness and luster.
Vitamin C is also good at combating free radicals which are unpaired electrons that can cause havoc in the cell structures of the skin by attaching themselves to and causing changes in the structures are well as the DNA of various components of the skin, especially the collagen. Vitamin C is able to mop up these free radicals and stop the chain reactions that they initiate which also goes a long way in refreshing the skin and ensuring that the effects of aging on the skin are no longer visible or felt.
Another important function of Vitamin C as an antioxidant is the fact that it works well when combined with other antioxidants. It has particularly synergistic effect when combined with Vitamin E. Combining the two of them ensures that the anti0-aging benefits are increased to more than four times what they would be with the use of either of the antioxidants on its own. This is because Vitamin C comes to the aid of oxidized Vitamin E and regenerates it, ensuring an improved battling of photoaging by the two products.
Vitamin C has also been known tom work well when combined with other antioxidants such as the polyphenols, particularly those found in red and green teas.
