Ascorbyl Glucoside (Ascorbic Acid 2- Glucoside)

Ascorbyl Glucoside in skin care:  stable L-ascorbic acid, antioxidant, collagen production, lightening & brightening, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage repair, sun damage protection

The antioxidant Ascorbyl Glucoside is made by combining the C2-hydroxyl group of L-ascorbic acid with glucose to make it more stable than just Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C on its own.) Once this compound gets into the skin it is broken down into Ascorbic Acid and glucose, using the enzyme Alpha-glucosidase. This process means that Ascorbyl Glucoside delivers into the skin a concentrated and pure form of Ascorbic Acid that has all its positive antioxidant properties.

Ascorbyl Glucoside works by drastically reducing the free radicals that are brought about by the exposure of the skin to UV radiation and has a lot of significant impact in reducing UV induced skin cell damage as well as the effects of photoaging.

Ascorbyl Glucoside (Ascorbic Acid 2- Glucoside)

About Ascorbyl Glucoside (Ascorbic Acid 2- Glucoside) in DIY Skin Care

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is a water-soluble ant oxidation agent that has a great many benefits in the repair and revitalization of skin cells that have been exposed to harmful UV rays. However, delivering Vitamin C into the skin can be quite a challenge due to the inherent instability of Vitamin C in its natural form. Vitamin C breaks down very fast when it is exposed to heat, light and oxygen and in certain elevated pH levels. This is why, for example natural Vitamin C cream turns to a dark yellow or brown in a short while. As a result, getting the right vehicle that will put Vitamin C into the skin and release it once it is in there is necessary – and this is precisely what Ascorbyl Glucoside provides. It also makes it last in the body a lot longer.

After it has been converted into Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Glucoside goes to work under the skin, delivering the following benefits:

It quickly regenerates collagen, resulting in the reversing of the effects of photoaging and giving the skin a firm, youthful and structured flexibility. It results in a significant reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and folding of the skin and also makes the skin smoother and have a more even tone even over a relatively short period of time.

It reduces the deterioration of skin cells that is caused by exposure to UV radiation by a significant amount and reverses the degenerative effects of UV rays on the skin by enhancing the fast synthesis of collagen, a vital fiber that gives skin its structure, firmness and body.

It combats the production of melanin resulting in the reversal of the effects of having age spots of pockets of hyperpigmentation in the skin, giving it a more even tone and appearance.

It reduces the number of free radicals in the cell caused in reaction to UV exposure and ensures that the cell damage that is caused by the chain reactions of oxidative stress are repaired, rebuilding the damaged skin cells and ensuring a return to a youthful toned skin that has more structure, less sagging and a luminous sheen to it.

Vitamin C has for long been used as a topical agent that makes skin softer, smoother and more even toned.

WARNING

  • Ascorbyl Glucoside is VERY acidic.
  • Ascorbyl Glucoside is ONLY stable at pH 5-7
  • You MUST use a stong alkaline (food grade lye/sodium hydroxide) to bring the pH up to 6.
  • Working with Sodium Hydroxide is DANGEROUS
  • Shipping Sodium Hydroxide via international airmail is ILLEGAL!
  • Food Grade Sodium Hydroxide Lye Micro Beads are readily available here:   USA

We STRONGLY suggest that you only buy Ascorbyl Glucoside if you are comfortable working with Sodium Hydroxide.

Note that we also sell two other VERY stable L-ascorbic acid derivatives:

Ethyl ascorbic acid  and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
Chemical Name: Ascorbic Acid 2-Glucoside (AAG2TM)
INCI: Ascorbyl Glucoside
CAS#: 129499-78-1
Solubility: water
Appearance: fine white powder
Suggested percentage: 2 %
 pH:  2.1 -2.8 (at 2% in water)
Stability:
  • highly stable in solution even at high temperatures and in the presence of metal ions.
  • Stable at pH 5-7
Storage: Cool, dry place. Do not freeze. Keep away from light and moisture!
Country of origin: Japan

  • After preparing an Ascorbyl Glucoside solution, neutralize it by using an alkali agent and then add it to the formulation.
  • If the formulation needs heating, cool down the formulations to 40-50°C and then add the neutralized  Ascorbyl Glucoside solution. Please avoid heating at high temperatures (above 40°C) for prolonged periods.
  • Adding buffers, chelating agents and antioxidants, and shielding from strong light are also useful in preventing Ascorbyl Glucoside from decomposition during formulation.
  • The stability of Ascorbyl Glucosideis influenced by pH. Please avoid leaving it under prolonged conditions of strong acidity or alkalinity (pH 2-4 and 9-12).
