Hyaluronic Acid (sodium hyaluronate powder)
About Hyaluronic Acid (sodium hyaluronate powder) in DIY Skin Care
Hyaluronic acid (correct name for the powder is: sodium hyaluronate, or Hyaluronan) is a powerfull moisturizer & humectant. Hyaluronic acid provides smoothness & softening to the skin and promotes growth of new skin cells after peelings
Hyaluronic acid as a moisturizer
Hyaluronic acid is a very effective moisturizer. HA can hold hundreds of times its weight in water and is often used in moisturizing formulas.
However, note Hyaluronic acid may have the opposite when used in dry climates.
In low humidity Hyaluronic acid may pull water from the skin. Care must be taken when formulating with Hyaluronic acid, and if skin appears drier then you will need to adjust your formulation to a lower amount, or consider using a different active.
Note that the combination of Niacinamide and Glucosamine has been proven to actually increase Hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin, thereby moisturizing from the inside, rather than putting moisture on top of the skin.
Hyaluronic acid as an anti-inflammatory and anti-skin irritant
Regular cosmetic grade Hyaluronic acid may reduce inflammation in the skin Hyaluronic acid stabilizes the space between cells in the dermis, and contributes significantly to cell proliferation, migration, and skin repair.
Topically applied Hyaluronic acid may also reduce skin irritation caused by retinoids, laser treatments, chemical peels etc. However, there are not many studies confirming this at present.
As we get older we have less hyaluronic acid in the skin matrixes. This may cause fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. The use of topical hyaluronic acid is therefore promoted as an anti-wrinkle cure. However, the molecular weight of regular cosmetic grade hyaluronic acid makes it unlikely to penetrate deep enough into the skin to have any affect
A new product on the market is ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid. Ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid can penetrate deep into the skin, and could therefore theoretically have an anti wrinkle affect. However, ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid may ALSO act as an inflammatory, the opposite affect as regular cosmetic grade Hyaluronic acid,
and it may therefore NOT be a suitable anti ageing skin care product.
For this reason we previously stopped selling ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid, and were encouraging customers to focus on using the Niacinamide/Glucosamine combination to increase natural Hyaluronic acid production in the skin.
Regrettably, customer demand for ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid remained high, and as some other suppliers continued selling this product we were losing customers. We have therefore restocked ultra low molecular weight Hyaluronic acid, but urge you to NOT buy it
, and instead use regular weight Hyaluronic acid as an anti inflammatory and moisturizer (in suitable climates), and again ask you to focus on the excellent combination of Niacinamide and Glucosamine
