Tried this on my week-old rash from flea bites. Got an almost instant relief and rash healed in 2 days. Tried it on my daughter who has eczema for a very long time. The rashes calmed down after a few days and her skin is now healing well. Really great product. Just put in order for another jar.... ...»

Just recently ordered this and LOVE! Green Tea EGCG truly is one of the most fantastic skincare actives out there. Very difficult to find good quality product (90%) and even harder to actually solubilize it! Love that it comes in pre-dissolved solution. I enjoy adding it at 1% (so 11% sol) to my serum formulations containing Niacinamide 5% + NAG 3%. Excellent for oily acne prone skin. *Only gripe... because the Pre-Dissolved Solution is SO heavy in propanediol (10 parts Propanediol for 1 part E.. ...»

Wonderful base cream! Only multi-lamellar structured cream I've found on the market. Cream itself is lightweight (no oil) yet very conditioning/hydrating. Easily accepts water-soluble active ingredients as well as oil-soluble ones. I've even pushed the additional ingred % up to 20 (meaning 80% this cream, 20% added) without any separation issues. Ideal base cream for delivering actives. Personal favorite recipe calls for 5% straight Grapeseed Oil with 5% SebumREG oil active + Panthenol 1% + E Ac.. ...»

Excellent base Ceramide 2, 3, 6II Lamellar Liquid Crystal PRE emulsion! It went very well for me and my daughter, she has atopic dermatitis. Literally on the third day of applying the cream (which is made up of Multi Lamellar Base Cream V2 Carrier Oil Free, NO Polymer 60%, 10% black currant oil, rice bran oil 5%, 1% of the complex of ceramides and water), the skin of my daughter got clean and healthy. I have noticeably narrowed pores, face was moist and disappeared on my forehead shine. Now Mul.. ...»

I've been using Bulkactives green tea EGCG for four years. No complaints, it blends nicely my DIY anti-aging cream. I can feel a bit of toning and definitely notice the anti-inflammatory effects on my skin. Two observations that keep the rating 4 stars instead of 5: (1) A package of green tea contains significantly less weight/volume than the package of grape seed extract that I order from bulkactives. The two are combined in equal amounts in the anti-aging cream, so I find myself running o.. ...»

Green Tea Polyphenols

Green tea is one of the richest source of polyphenols – phytochemicals that are very beneficial for the human body, including our skin. Besides ECGC (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), green tea has numerous other polyphenolic compounds with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and protective properties. Research on Green Tea Polyphenols (GTPP) showed that their anti-oxidant potency sometimes surpasses Vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. GTPP provide efficient protection against UV radiation and fight photo-aging. Furthermore, in topical application, green tea has anti-inflammatory properties that along inhibiting sebum production makes GTPP a great addition in anti-acne formulations. The anti-inflammatory properties are also useful in other skin conditions such as rosacea and dermatitis. Last, but not least, GTPP has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. With such versatility, green tea polyphenols are a great ingredient for a wide array of DIY formulations.

About Green Tea Polyphenols in DIY Skin Care

Polyphenols are micro-nutrients (phytochemicals) that are naturally found in plants. They are linked to numerous health benefits because of their anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and protective actions. There are hundreds (over 500) phytochemicals that fall in the polyphenol category. They can be sub-divided in categories such as: phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans and stilbenes – all with proven action and benefits on human health.
Green tea (Camellia Sinensis) is one of the richest sources of polyphenols available.  A 2011 study showed that dietary consumption of green tea improves skin hydration, skin elasticity, TEWL and overall skin health [1].

Besides the dietary intake, research showed that topical use of polyphenol enriched formulations is efficient in addressing several skin conditions and also maintaining a young looking, healthy skin.

Green tea is one of the most popular DIY skin care ingredient because it’s ECGC (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) content. ECGC is also a catechin – which belongs to the polyphenol group. However, what is less known but very relevant to skin care is that green tea has a high polyphenolic content besides ECGC.

There are several studies that focus on the benefits of green tea for the skin. Research showed that phenolic acids have superior anti-oxidant activity comparing to vitamin C, E and beta-carotene [2, 3].

Both in vitro and in vivo studies showed that polyphenols, especially flavonoids from the green tea have photo-protective effects [4, 5]. Another study showed that because of their antioxidant properties green tea polyphenols (GTPP) show protection against UV harmful effects. Topically applied green tea extract showed reduction in redness, erythema, DNA damage, radical oxygen species (ROS) formation, and carcinogenesis [6].

GTPP are also efficient in addressing skin aging – especially photoaging – this because of its strong anti-oxidant properties. Polyphenols fight free radicals – which are responsible for promoting DNA oxidation. GTPP inhibit collagenase activity in two distinct ways. Furthermore, they are free-radical scavengers, metalloproteinase and collagenase inhibitors and boost collagen biosynthesis rate. This translates in skin aging & photoaging prevention [7].
Research assessing green tea in anti-acne topical application (3% tea extract) showed statistically relevant drops in sebum production after 8 weeks utilization. GTPP show both sebosuppressive (sebum production inhibiting) and anti-inflammatory effects [8, 9].

GTPP also exhibit skin lighting properties, as research shows. One of the green tea polyphenols – ellagic acid (EA) - in particular showed strong anti-oxidative properties and tyrosinase inhibition. This – through the process of chelation – reduces the tyrosinase activity and inhibits melanocytes proliferation [4, 10].

Tea polyphenols have also been validated as effective against a wide range of viruses such as Epstein-Barr, adenovirus and influenza. ECCG also inactivated the Herpes Simplex virus. The anti-viral properties of polyphenols are linked to their capacity to bind to the viral capsule, changing the dynamics of the plasma membrane [7, 10].

Last, but not least, GTPP showed anti-inflammatory properties in both in vitro and in vivo studies. One of the main mechanisms is the inhibition of arachidonic acid conversion into proinflammatory agents [11]. When applied topically, the polyphenols from green tea are helpful in addressing several inflammatory conditions of the skin, including acne, dermatitis, and rosacea. [12]

GTPP have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and photoprotective action. They hold mechanisms that influence biochemical processes – both in digestive and topical formulations [13].

Researchers also found that GTPP in topical formulations in cosmetics improves skin elasticity, prevents excessive TEWL and increases skin moisturization [14]. Because of their strong anti-oxidant properties GTPP are also a great adjuvant in complex formulations and enhance the effects of other active ingredients, through a synergic effect.

Concluding, there are overwhelming benefits in using green tea in topical formulations. The GTPP are potent antioxidants and also have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects. Furthermore, they have great skin compatibility and are easy to include in DIY formulations. The only remaining thing is to make sure you use a safe, high-quality source for your ingredients.

NOTE: To assist you with solubility issues, we now also sell Green Tea Poyphenols in a standardized  pre-dissolved solution. Just add the liquid to your cream and mix well.
