Solvents are a vital part of DIY skin care. At BulkActives we find the following claim, made by a 'scientific' supplier, completely unacceptable.

"The powder will not dissolve immediately but will release components slowly into the cream or lotion."

We suggest that if an active ingredient is not dissolved, the user will end up with a cream that is extremely unpleasant to wear, entirely unsuitable for day-time use, and in many cases ineffective.

To dissolve an active ingredients you need the right solvent. It is an unavoidable fact that in many cases the best solvent for herbal extracts is either ethanol (everclear in the USA) or propylene glycol. Many other actives will dissolve in water or carrier oils. There are a few actives that do dissolve easily in a pre-made cream.

We also offer the product dimethyl isosorbide, which is a safe solvent and penetration enhancer. Dimethyl isosorbide is most effective with water soluble ingredients, but is also able to handle a few herbal extracts.
